What is CFS Disease?

What is CFS Disease?
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, (CFS) is defined as a complex disorder characterized by extreme fatigue. But if you read my last blog, or if you suffer from this condition, then you are aware that the symptoms go far beyond fatigue.

The onset of my symptoms began in 1989. When my Internist could find no explanation for the extreme fatigue, headaches, muscle and joint aches, and foggy mind that I suffered from, he handed me a prescription for antidepressants and referred me to a therapist. My symptoms got progressively worse until I was no longer able to work at my corporate job.

Having never suffered from anything that a short course of antibiotics wouldn’t fix, I had no idea that I would end up on disability for nine years. It’s mind-boggling that after nearly 30 years of research there are still no concrete answers for what causes this condition.

CFS cannot be defined as a disease because it fails to meet the criteria of a “disease.” The word “syndrome” is used to refer to a group of symptoms defined as a medical mystery – hence the name, "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome." Typically, diseases can be easily identified whereas syndromes are more difficult to identify.

Since chronic fatigue syndrome consists of so many symptoms - symptoms that vary from patient to patient - treatment will depend on the individual patient’s needs. According to the MayoClinic, treatment for chronic fatigue syndrome consists of medications and therapy. The Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention describes the treatment of CFS as “complex” and one that should be customized to the patient.

After seven long years of following medical advice with no improvement whatsoever, I decided to reclaim my power. My healthcare providers had prescribed so many drugs that I had reached a point where could no longer identify if my symptoms were a result of my CFS or side effects of the medications I was taking.

My recovery required a well-rounded and balanced approach that began with me making well-informed decisions.
